Our gardening experts’ favorite seed-starting accessories

Add a modern twist to your seed-starting season with our experts’ picks. Discover four accessories that are optional but still bring added value to your gardening experience by boosting growth and maximizing results.

Seedling mat with thermostat

A seedling mat offers a significant advantage by slightly raising the temperature of the soil, promoting fast, efficient seed germination. The mat is easy to use—simply place it under the seed tray, and remove it once the first shoots have emerged.

Grow light

A grow light provides ideal light exposure (between 14 and 16 hours), which will maximize seedling development. However, you need to choose the right type of light, such as a fluorescent or LED lamp, and avoid incandescent bulbs. It’s also important to choose a model that allows you to adjust the height as the seedlings grow, so the light is always between 15 and 30 centimetres above the plants.

Multicell seed-starting tray

A multicell seed-starting tray allows practical organization of seedling varieties, facilitates pricking out later on, and reduces the risk of competition among seedlings. Drainage holes at the bottom of each cell prevent root rot. In addition, it optimizes space use and makes handling easier.

Biodegradable seedling pots

Peat-based biodegradable pots are ideal for pricking out seedlings. Once seedlings have turned into healthy plants ready to be planted in the ground, there’s no need to remove the pots, which greatly reduces the transplant shock.

Choosing the right seeds for your seedlings

With our organic seeds and heirloom varieties adapted to northern climate, your vegetable garden will be successful! By choosing these seeds, you not only promote the vigorous growth of your vegetables, flowers, and herbs but also contribute to the preservation of biodiversity. These smart choices will guarantee more abundant harvests, more blooming flowers, and health benefits for you and your family.

When to start your seeds indoors

March marks the long-awaited return to indoor gardening! However, it’s important to remember that not all seeds should be planted at the same time. The time required for different vegetables and herbs to sprout varies, which means you need to sow them over a period of several weeks. Here’s a cheat sheet for vegetables often found in our gardens.

10 Easy Steps to Starting Seedlings Indoors

  1. Gather the supplies: potting soil, seed tray, seeds, labels, and spray bottle.
  2. Moisten the potting soil, and fill the tray cells.
  3. Sow the seeds according to the recommendations on the packaging, and identify the cells/pots.
  4. Water lightly with a spray bottle, and then place a plastic dome over the seeds to retain heat and moisture.
  5. Place the seed tray in a warm, sunny spot.
  6. Remove the plastic dome as soon as the seeds start to germinate, and then keep the soil moist but not soggy.
  7. Transplant the seedlings into larger pots as soon as a second pair of leaves appear.
  8. Adapt your seedlings to the outdoors once the last risk of frost has passed.
  9. Plant your plants in the vegetable garden.
  10. Enjoy delicious vegetables and herbs all summer long!
