Gardeners’ favorite fall trio: Hydrangeas, rudbeckias, and fall sedums

This arrangement of flowers can create something spectacular in fall. Hydrangeas, rudbeckias, and fall sedums are easy to care for and offer a dazzling variety of shapes and colors. Some hydrangea varieties, such as Hydrangea paniculata, can produce flowers that persist for most of the autumn season, adding color and interest to your plantings until the first frost arrives. Rudbeckias bring warm, luminous tones, ranging from bright yellow to deep orange. Some varieties, such as Rudbeckia laciniata, can start flowering in midsummer and continue until early fall and even until the first frost. Their abundant, prolonged flowering makes them an attractive addition to your yard, bringing bursts of bright color for several weeks. Some varieties of fall sedum, such as sedum spectabile “Autumn Joy” and “Brilliant”, offer not only attractive late flowering but also texture and color to your plantings. They blend harmoniously in the foreground with different varieties of autumn plants.

Fall perennial flowers: Vibrant from petals to foliage

Perennial fall flowers, with their rich colors and diverse shapes, bring vitality and beauty to your plantings during the fall. They extend the blooming period and add color as temperatures begin to cool. Here are some of the most beautiful perennial flowers that can brighten your home for fall:

Asters: Popular during fall, asters offer a profusion of flowers in shades of purple, pink, and white. Their star shape adds a delicate touch to any fall garden. They generally flower from late summer to early fall. They are attractive, hardy, and easy-to-maintain perennials.

Heleniums: Also known as “sneezeweed,” heleniums produce daisy-like flowers with often narrow petals and domed centers, in shades of yellow, orange, and red. Their late, abundant blooms brighten outdoor spaces in fall.

Echinaceas: Echinaceas stand out for their large, daisy-like flowers that can vary in color from pink to purple to white. They are beautiful, hardy perennials, distinguished by their robust, upright appearance. Some varieties of echinacea can produce flowers throughout fall, but most reach their flowering peak early in the season.

Autumn anemones: Because of their late bloom and elegance, autumn anemones are often used in fall flower beds and garden borders. They come in a variety of colors, including white, pink, and purple. Autumn anemones bloom in early fall for several weeks, adding a splash of color at the end of the season.

Other beautiful autumn varieties to consider are eupatoriums, chelone, lamb’s ear, vernonias, perennial sunflowers, toad lilies, aconites, heuchera, and bergenia.

Chrysanthemums: The autumn icon

Chrysanthemums are undoubtedly Quebecers’ favorite fall flower, thanks to the unrivaled beauty of their many colorful blooms. They offer a wide range of colors and are easy to care for. Although some varieties of fall chrysanthemums are considered annuals, it’s important to know that some of them tolerate cold well. For example, autumn mums, if planted directly in the ground in your flower beds, will continue to bloom every year (Minn, Firecracker, Morden, and Mammoth series). Many people also like to use them in pots to embellish their porches and add a touch of autumn.

Planting bulbs in fall

Can’t wait until summer to enjoy pretty flowers in your yard? No problem! By planting bulbs in fall, you’ll be able to enjoy early, spectacular flowering the following spring. Because bulbs need cold weather to trigger their flowering process, winter will allow them to prepare properly. For best conditions, make sure you plant your bulbs at the recommended depth, in well-drained soil in the sun. Tulips, daffodils, crocuses, hyacinths, narcissi, and more will let you enjoy pretty flowers as early as April!

Lawn care in fall—The importance of autumn grass fertilizer

Even though the warm season is over and temperatures are cooling, your lawn still needs care. It’s important to fertilize your lawn with a specially formulated fall fertilizer, rich in potassium, which will increase its resistance to cold and disease. This should be done twice, once between mid-August and mid-September, and a second time toward the end of October.

Our article, Taking care of your lawn all year round, will give you many valuable tips for maintaining your lawn throughout the seasons.
