Create a Christmas tree with succulents

Every year, you seek original ideas for your Holiday decor. Always on the lookout for that special eye-catching element, you scour decorating magazines, reference sites and spend countless hours on Pinterest. If you want to add an exotic and eco-friendly touch to your Holiday table, why not try a DIY project of a mini Christmas tree made from succulents? It’s simple, pretty as can be, easy to maintain and most importantly, it’s a guaranteed wow effect!

How to make a Christmas tree from succulents?

To make a succulent Christmas tree, you need :

  • Oasis cone or cone-shaped sphagnum moss structure soaked in water
  • Small size succulents
  • Plate, wood log or other to fix the structure
  • LED light string, small ornaments and other decorations
  • Chopstick to make holes
  • Toothpick to fix the plants
  • Spray bottle

You will also need some creativity and patience to complete your project.

The steps

  1. First, attach your cone to the base.
  2. Then make holes with your chopstick and insert the succulents into the structure, starting with the larger ones. Use toothpicks if necessary to hold them in place.
  3. Next, add your smaller succulents and fill in the gaps with moss if necessary.
  4. Do not hesitate to move the plants as you build your Christmas tree so that it is harmonious and suits your taste.
  5. Decorate! Add a little star at the top, wrap your string of lights, insert mini ornaments or even berries between the leaves to add colour… be imaginative!

Maintenance of a succulent Christmas tree

The beauty of succulents is that they require almost nothing. Place your new star decoration in a well lighted area, without direct sunlight and spray a little water occasionally, if you see that it is necessary only. Your composition will last for several weeks, without further care.

Christmas is over, what to do with your succulent tree?

Once the festivities are over, you may not want to keep your tree in its current shape. You can gently remove the used plants and replant them in a new container or create a terrarium. These little succulent wonders will allow you to decorate another corner of the house for your greatest pleasure. An interesting and ecological decoration, what could be better?
