Integrating plants into Christmas decorations

We often talk about Christmas plants, those plants that need shorter days to bloom and therefore offer the maximum of their beauty for the holiday season. These include poinsettias, amaryllis and Christmas cacti (see our article: Flowers for Christmas). But is it possible to make room for our indoor and tropical plants in our Christmas decorations? And what about cacti and succulents? Here are some ideas for creating a different kind of holiday decor with plants:

Christmas terrariums

Terrariums are easy to make and very fun; they are a great way to introduce children to gardening by allowing them to create pieces in their image. You can find many figurines, globes and other ornaments in stores that will allow you to create terrariums specifically for the festive season. Choose a few succulents of various shapes and colors and complete your arrangement with sand or small white stones reminiscent of snow, or use materials in the colors of your decor so that everything matches perfectly. Synthetic snow or glitter can also be a great addition to your holiday terrarium. Use your terrarium as a centerpiece, side table decoration or even under the tree, why not?

Succulent Ornaments

Because they thrive in little soil, succulents are ideal for vertical gardening. You can create frames of different shapes and wreaths to hang on doors and walls featuring them. You can also create small 3D structures like topiaries to reproduce the shape of a Christmas tree for example, where you can simply insert different succulents in a cone of floral foam and decorate it as you wish. You will be a sensation for sure!

Decorate the tropicals

Your house is already well decorated thanks to your indoor plants. Why not simply give them a festive look by adding a few garlands of lights or ornaments? You can also decorate the pots with bows or tulle to make them even more festive. There are also themed planters that you can use for a few weeks. Be careful not to damage the branches with heavy decorative elements, some are fragile. It is also recommended to use LED bulbs for lights as they do not give off heat. Your plants will be happy to contribute to your holiday decor, but they will be happier if they maintain their health.

There is no shortage of ideas for incorporating plants into Christmas. Plus, they make great gifts for friends and family. Remember to protect them from the cold, however, cover them if you have to transport them and don’t leave them in the car too long. They are always a pleasure. Be imaginative, you’ll find plenty of ways to decorate Christmas.
