Making a Christmas tree pot in a few steps

Cold weather is coming and now is the time to transform your fall flower pots with winter pots that will decorate your home’s entrance, balcony or driveway for the next few months. Who says you can’t garden year round in Quebec? Let’s be honest, we’re talking more about DIY than horticulture here, but the fact remains that a bit of greenery that stands out from the all-white landscape brings a lot of joy to a gardener’s heart. Ideally, do this project before the soil in your containers freezes, it will make your job easier.

To make your winter pots, you will need:

  • A few branches of natural or artificial fir (fir, pine, spruce, etc.)
  • Some more rigid branches to give structure: birch, willow, dogwood
  • Stems of red berries to give colour. You can easily find them in garden centres or Christmas stores. Make sure they are durable for outdoor use
  • Decorative elements on stems that you can integrate into your arrangement

Making your Christmas tree pot

  1. Choose a plastic or wooden pot, ceramic pots may break.
  2. Fill it with soil up to a few centimeters from the edge, compacting it so that the materials hold well. Keep the soil from your pots and add some to fill the space.
  3. Plant fir branches at an angle to the outside of the pot. The triangle shape usually gives a very nice look.
  4. Plant other evergreen branches more centrally, upward, reversing the triangle.
  5. Prick your other branches and stems to fill in the gaps and give structure and height to your pot.
  6. Complete with decorative elements and other branches as needed, until you are satisfied.
  7. Water abundantly and place your pot outside, the cold will freeze everything and keep the elements in place.

For the Holidays season

Your winter planter will remain beautiful throughout the cold season. If you want to give it a festive look for Christmas, it’s easy! Here are some ideas:

  • Add a string of lights through the branches to make your pot sparkle.
  • Place a few Christmas ornaments at the base of your pot or attached to the branches.
  • Wrap a beautiful fabric bow around your planter.
  • Replace the cones with poinsettia flowers, artificial ones of course.

Once the holidays are over, simply remove the themed elements and you’re done. Have fun creating beautiful plant decorations even in winter.
